ARTWORK HAND FINISHING
Once printed, I hand finish this artwork by adding ‘gold size’ glue with a little paintbrush to typographic and other areas to which I then add vibrant metallic foils to brushing any any excess with a soft brush. This brings an extra layer of shiny vibrance, especially as you walk around the artwork and the light catches it!
THE STORY BEHIND THE PRINT...
Come with me as I wander around the neighbourhood into a kaleidoscopic world of colour, smells and sounds. As an artist, I’m so privileged to have a never ending source of inspiration in my home of Singapore. The city is changing and some of my favourite places including Tanglin Halt, a small local community behind my home, are being modernised to join the throngs of high rise towering shiny buildings which are growing ever higher to the sky.
Outside a family run local mom and pop DIY store, I’m taken by the bright neon bristles of some plastic brooms and some stacked multicoloured towers of washing up bowls - ordinary everyday essential items that take on a whole new dimension when grouped together. I stop, admire and take a photo to capture it. These moments bring me joy as I imagine where this could be added into my print.
Further along, full of curiosity, I wander down a little backstreet and find two little chairs propped up against an old tin electrical box, snuggled into each other like an old married couple, full of character and charm, I wonder who may have sat on them to enjoy a restful afternoon tea break and chat.
‘Singapore Streets Neon Pop’ is the culmination of lots of these inspirational visits to the different areas of the city. From the beautiful vibrant market stalls of ‘Little India’ dripping in garlands of floral offerings to the Gods, to the noisy and wonderfully atmospheric hawker centres where steam rises from little stalls and the buzz of social eating fills the air. The melting pot of Singapore where old is juxtaposed to the new criss crosses its way around the island.
This print is a reflection of its collective story and a nostalgic trip down memory lane with the inclusion of the old ride-on coin slot toys, details from traditional packaging and the undeniably Asian bright colour pops which dance before your eyes.
These everyday details of vibrant city life are all celebrated and as with all my prints I like to leave surprises to be “found” as you breathe in the print. For those who love colour - this is the equivalent of dopamine dressing for your walls!
