As a graphic designer I love to work with typography, so for this design I thought it would be fun to create a colourful lasting memory of Singapore using type combined with images. The images are photographs of vintage objects I have collected or buildings on the street that relate to a ‘nostalgic’ look at Singapore’s heritage. The little boy and girl playing ping pong appear on some tea cups I have in my studio, the beaded slippers a photo taken through a shop window in Joo Chiat. Two mischievous little white rabbits from an old vintage tin are playfully towing a basket on wheels full of ‘White Rabbit’ milk sweets past a couple of traditional plastic outdoor chairs.
I also added a few references to some of Singapore’s favourite foods with a bowl of Laksa, the well loved chilli crab and the delicious Peranakan treat - ‘kueh pie tee’ or ‘top hats’ as they are affectionately known - little bites bursting with a blend of Chinese and Malay flavours. At the top of the design are fringes of embroidered ribbon and brocade photographed hanging above an old wedding day bed which I have adorned with tiny ‘iced gem biscuits’ for a little fun! I used to live in an old shophouse on Koon Seng Road and have added some of the houses from my old street which are very famous for their architectural style and colours.
There are many fun references in this design that celebrate our love for our ‘Little Red Dot’ with a hint of vintage nostalgia.
